Debut Album 'WEB' featuring Stephen Magnusson

Debut Album 'WEB' featuring Stephen Magnusson

Ashley Ballat is so excited to share her debut album! In 2020-2021 she worked with an incredible mentor, the renowned Australian jazz guitarist Stephen Magnusson, to create an album online over the COVID-19 lockdown period. Together they composed and recorded a collection of ethereal melodies that ring over a warm sonic landscape. Through shades of timbre, layers of overdubs and fluid improvisation, emerges Web.

Robbie Williams

Ashley was asked to play trumpet for Robbie Williams’ pre-game performance for the AFL grand final in 2022. Delta Goodrum made an appearance for their final song ‘Kids’.

Festival Of New Trumpet

The Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT Music) is a non-profit organisation based in New York City, run by trumpeter Dave Douglas. Since 2003, the festival has commissioned and presented new music from a diverse community of trumpet and brass players, through a series of performances and workshops. This series of the 2022 festival is called Brass Without Borders, which is a celebration of trumpet and brass players from around the world. Ashley was handpicked to curate a performance, and that project is called LOOM. You can watch the full performance below, which features the performances of Natsuki Tamura (Japan), Jeanette Nenezian (Argentina) and finally Ashley Ballat (Australia).

LOOM:

Ashley and Ollie have formed a strong musical connection over the past few years, bound by their shared passion for timbre, texture, and playfulness within improvisation. This performance is a free improvisational session with Ashley Ballat playing trumpet and Ollie Cox processing sound on electronics and overdubbed percussion.

Online Collaborations

In 2020 I was lucky enough to work online with Stephen Magnusson during the COVID-19 Victorian lockdown. Here are two videos that we recorded individually and put together.

Mecernary Pounds is Magnusson’s original, recorded live over Zoom into our independent DAWs.

A Letter is my original, which I begun by overdubbing layers of trumpet, and sent the product to Magnusson for his improvisations.

‘Reflections’ by Jake Amy

“In contemplation I look through my bedroom window to a clear evening sky. Golden sunlight dances through luscious foliage. My hands make shapes on a plastic-keyed piano. Colours of yellow, blue and orange stream through my consciousness - I hear ever-changing reflections of times passed. My hands create patterns, improvising without thought. I feel heartbroken.

I am reminded by your absence that life is unforgiving, unexpected, unfair. You're where we will all be some day - a part of the land.” - Jake Amy

Earth Songs: Mia Barham

This album by Mia Barham is “an exploration of the beautiful natural world we cohabit. I spend a lot of time in nature and I have always found a sense of peace in that world. Many of these compositions were written about the time I spent in Warrnambool, on the Victorian Coastline, which is my father’s family’s hometown. We travelled back to Warrnambool for my grandfather’s funeral, where we all reconnected and found solace in a place that is close to all our hearts. Earth Songs is a raw exploration of connection, peace and comfort.” - Mia Barham

Reflections EP: Jake Amy

“Featured in this recording is vocalist and long-time collaborator Rose Bassett. Rose and I met at university where our love for music, humour and politics combined. We’ve been involved in a variety of projects together, and I am once again so privileged to work with such an incredible musician and friend. Each song on this EP aims to paint its own landscape. I hope you find comfort in these images.” - Jake Amy

Play Jazz 2: The Rookies

Melbourne’s favourite cult jazz band the Rookies return with their 3rd LP, Play Jazz 2, a sequel to their acclaimed debut, Play Jazz. This new collection of reimagined songs from the vast pantheon of jazz standard repertoire features arrangements of music by Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus, Ron Carter and Ornette Coleman, as well as a post-rock-tinged vision of Juan Tizol’s classic standard (and fan favourite at the Rookies’ regular Wednesday night residency) ‘Caravan’.

I Hear Music: Tahnee Ollerton

“The making of this album began in 2018, after hearing a recording of my dad speaking about his relationship with his impending death. Since he passed, I have had a lot of time to think about death, and what is left after death. The thousand million things that make up a life and being human, fascinates me so much.” - Tahnee Ollerton

Respire (single)

Emma Volard is 22-year-old future-soul artist hailing from the quiet inner city suburb of Carlton North. Respire is an entrancing and contemplative rite-of-passage nu-soul anthem that meditates on the idea of growth, self-reflection and empowerment after the breakdown of a unsteady relationship.

The Dream

In looking for an Australian connection to inspire the work, I stumbled on the prose and poetry of Kevin Gilbert. His connection to land, to people, ancestors, and to love, moved me deeply. The imagery in his work, and as I later found out, his graphic artwork, felt keenly attuned to sound and musical expression. Each piece was inspired by one of his works and, with deep respect and feeling, we crafted a lyric and an improvisational content in collaboration.

-Dave Douglas

Orange (single)

Led by Melbourne-via-Perth musician Fiz Eustance, the new project ‘Orange’ gleams with a bright and addictive indie-folk-pop sound.

- Hayden Davies

Kala Gare: Live at The Paris Cat

Monash Sessions: Linda May Han Oh

"These original pieces are from two of my previous albums - 'Walk Against Wind' and 'Sun Pictures'. On this recording, I rearranged these pieces for these slightly larger configurations and in a short amount of time, these up-and-coming musicians at Monash University learned and executed a considerable amount of challenging music, really delivering their best and doing a fantastic job. They offered their own distinct musical interpretations that I found touching and honest, giving myself a different perspective of these tunes.” - Linda Oh

Monash Sessions: Sandy Evans & Andrea Keller

“A truly inspiring week of music, created with the talented young musicians at Monash University, and my mentor and dear friend Sandy Evans. What an honour to hear my music played by both small and large ensembles, to be immersed in the exuberant energy of the students, and to witness one of Australia‘s great musical leaders work across the spectrum of teaching, performing, and recording.” - Andrea Keller
